@dave what does it take to get a podcast on the front page of podcastindex? And who do I pay off?

Seriously though, it says recent activity, but some of the episodes I am seeing are from 2017, are they supposed to be recent in time or recent in addition to the index?

@davekeeshan Oh, really? Well, that's no good. Let me check the code.

@davekeeshan Looking at the code it's just a reverse ID sort. I think that's just going to be a temporary thing until the back-fill by @cisene is complete. Then it'll go back to normal.

@davekeeshan @cisene But, you can still front me loads of cash though, if you want to. 😉

@dave @cisene hmmm.... it might actually be worth it ...

I wonder if you could/should bias podcasts that are starting to use the podcasting 2.0 tags. An incentive to use them ... maybe ...

@davekeeshan @dave @cisene Is your podcast using 2.0 features? I'll give you a plug on the socials

@adam @dave @cisene

I'll take that action!

I have been working with the podlove guys to help open up some of the tags, though I have added locked, location and value myself locally. Podlove already has funding, person, transcript and chapters.

@davekeeshan @dave @cisene I was going to tweet from podfriend when I saw there's an error loading the audio. Experience tells me that this is likely a CORS issue, luckily we have experts here who can tell you for sure and how to address it.

@adam @dave @cisene I have been having issues with breez as well, I assumed it was my phone. Maybe its one of the tags?

@davekeeshan @adam @dave @cisene
This is weird… Did you ask @martin?

I don't see any CORS error here…
But I see way to many redirections and analytics mess…

RSS ➜ chartable ➜ podtrac ➜ gurucomedy.com ➜ buzzsprout ➜ failure
You have both Amazon CloudFront and Cloudflare involved on your critical path…

I would not want to brag 😉 but this is why @Castopod embeds its own analytics service:
- you and you only own your audience data
- you don't have to rely on gazillions of other systems…

@benjaminbellamy @adam @dave @cisene @martin @Castopod

What can I say I don't trust any analytics, none of them seem to give numbers remotely close to the same numbers

Is castopod any better? How can I tell?

As to cloud flare, well yes it is in there, caching, but I am curious to know why that might be an issue?

@davekeeshan @adam @dave @cisene @martin

@Castopod follows the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines.
They are not more accurate than others but they are open (everyone knows how counting is performed) and free (which is pretty cool I think).
iabtechlab.com/standards/podca

Analytics is useful only for comparison purpose: from one month to another, from one country to another, from one player to another, from one podcast to another…

My 2 cents: The absolute value has no value at all.

@benjaminbellamy @adam @dave @cisene @martin @Castopod

That is possibly true, but even then there should at least be a consistency in numbers. I am not talking about exactly the same, but as an engineer I am happy when I get to +/- 5%

I suppose the past year has seen some improvements, to be fair, and really what I am studying.

However while may redirects is a pain, I don't think it is illegal, and I imagine that there are other "geniuses" like me out there. Plan for the biggest fool!

@davekeeshan @adam @dave @cisene @martin @Castopod
I'm not talking about legal aspect here.
Just saying that with such a long chain you increase the risks for your podcast not to be available: if only one single link fails then your whole podcast becomes unavailable, to all.
That's a big risk you're taking if you ask me. But maybe you aren't asking me. 😉

@benjaminbellamy @adam @dave @cisene @martin @Castopod

Fair point, I'll take it into consideration.

My podcast is an exploration on the back end and much as the front end, these are the type of things I am curious about (probably to the detriment of actually producing new episodes)

Though looking objectively it is my website that runs the risk of being the weak link.

@davekeeshan @benjaminbellamy @adam @cisene @martin @Castopod At least one of those redirects is also bound to be on an ad-blocker also. That’s the most likely explanation for the failure.

@dave @benjaminbellamy @adam @cisene @martin @Castopod

But which one?

Was chartable doing something recently that was threatening to get them marked as ad-ware?

@davekeeshan @dave @adam @cisene @martin @Castopod
I don't think anyone really knows...
(Technically if they store ip addresses they should ask for consent but how could you implement tcf v2 on podcasts?)
Their domain name has been blocked by ad blockers...

@benjaminbellamy @dave @adam @cisene @martin @Castopod

Right well that's probably it, I'll yank them tonight.

So my horrendous redirects aren't the problem, just that one.

I wonder how many other podcasts are affected?

@davekeeshan @benjaminbellamy @dave @adam @cisene @Castopod

Probably a lot, but I guess most podcast players do not have ad blockers inbuilt so they will not notice. This probably mostly occurs in web players (or people that blocks ads on the router level)

@adam @benjaminbellamy @martin @davekeeshan @dave @cisene
Yes I had figured that out: I have no ad blocker and it also failed.

@Castopod @adam @benjaminbellamy @martin @dave @cisene

I just disabled podtrac and chartable,does that work for anybody, I am not too sure how the system is cached for some of those apps, it may take some time to percolate through.

@benjaminbellamy @Castopod @adam @martin @dave @cisene

Right so the rss should be cached with cloud flare, and I am not too sure what caching happens at the rss level in podfriend, there isn't a guid for the rss feed, is there?

@davekeeshan @benjaminbellamy @Castopod @adam @dave @cisene

It caches for roughly 5 minutes and then refreshes if you go to the show page itself.

@benjaminbellamy @Castopod @adam @martin @dave @cisene

What's that? Podfriend? Maybe @martin can comment on why it would be failing.

It is a link that should resolve to a file, at this point it should be similar to thousands of other podcasts. (I think)

@davekeeshan @benjaminbellamy @Castopod @adam @martin @cisene If anyone is using Brave then the ad blocking is done in the browser itself.

It works for me in Firefox.
